Harper has plenty of acreage to use for its school gardens. It also offers community garden plots for rent to the public. They have a system of tanks to catch rainwater from roofs and an aquaculture pond whose water will be used on the garden. Keep up with Harper garden and recycling projects at their website.
The Harper Harvest Project for fall 2013 is a large scale planting of broccoli and lettuce destined for use by the DJUSD Student Nutrition Services kitchen. In this pilot project, the SNS has agreed to purchase produce from the Harper garden. School gardens can use this model to become self-sustaining enterprises while SNS gains an opportunity to serve premium fresh, local produce at lower costs.
Their recycling program is breaking new ground with a comprehensive plan that involves school staff, lunch supervisors and students. A consistent system of signage developed by Harper RISE leader Carrie Juchau helps to keep the recycle containers organized. This signage is also being used at all of the elementary schools.
