FARM FRESH LUNCHES

Farm Fresh Food in the School Meal Program

Davis Farm to School works in partnership with DJUSD Student Nutrition Services to support their efforts to increase quantities of local fruits and vegetables in school meals and to provide nutrition education to all students. DJUSD has salad bars at every site that serves hot lunch. The salad bars include “crunch mix” salad greens, local and seasonal fruits and vegetables, and made-from-scratch whole-grain salads. School meals also include delicious made-from-scratch hot lunch entrees.

Funding for the improved lunches came from the  2007 passage of Measure Q (a parcel tax) which provided funds to increase fresh produce in the school lunch program. The funding was renewed in 2012 with Measure C.

DJUSD has made tremendous progress in school lunch quality in the past few years. Give school lunch a try for your student or yourself!  To find DJUSD school lunch menus, visit DJUSD Student Nutrition Services. On their site you can pre-pay for your student’s lunch.

Cafeteria Taste and Learn

As a way to promote farm fresh offerings in school meals, Davis Farm to School has worked with Student Nutrition Services to provide taste testers and special lunch events for local elementary schools. Volunteer taste testers promote school lunch offerings and educate children about good nutrition.  Voting for favorite lunch foods was another fun way to get students to engage with their food selections.
