Find scarecrows and wreaths at Pioneer Elementary

Pioneer Elementary was an early leader in farm to school activities, thanks to Dorothy Peterson who taught there for many years. Current Garden Coordinator Sheryl Yamamoto has news about worms and wreaths that you can read about below.

Our next team meeting is at Pioneer Elementary on Thursday Feb. 5th at 4 pm. If you are interested in attending and learning more about Pioneer's programs and Davis Farm to School, please contact us at Info@davisfarmtoschool.org for more information.

Pioneer Elementary Garden Program

The Pioneer Elementary School garden program had a fun and successful fall semester with our dedicated 2014-15 team consisting of over 18 inspiring parent/grandparent volunteers who facilitated weekly classes. Super-volunteer Donna Cassidy worked more than 20 hours per week maintaining our garden. We also have a wonderfully supportive PTA and school community. Together we introduced a number of new and exciting gardening lessons to K-3rd graders, built and sold creative scarecrows at the Pioneer Elementary Fall Festival and sold over 225 student-made rosemary wreaths on our campus and at the Wednesday evening Davis Farmer’s Market. We thank the Western Grower’s Association, Davis Farm to School, RC Haseltine Construction/Pine Trails Ranch, Napa Recycling and Waste Services, Carrie Juchau from the Harper garden program, Dorothy Peterson, and the Davis Rotary who generously provided us with advice, funds and materials to expand our curriculum, maintain our site, add new raised boxes and perform needed repairs to our infrastructure. We are excited about the coming months with our students and look forward to nurturing a passion for gardening, encouraging curiosity about nature, and inspiring a love for fresh grown food!
